Blog 09: Prem Jano Purno Holo – Rupak Tiary

This weekend is dedicated to die hard romantics. Hence, the latest release of the viral YouTube sensation, Rupak Tiary’s ‘Prem Jano Purno Holo‘ is bound to become the love anthem this season. This music video is a sequel to the first one named ‘Tor Naame Lekha’. The most asked question in comment section was, “H.S. er por ki holo?” i.e. “What happened after the Higher Secondary examination?”. The makers realised that this occassion of Saraswati Puja was ripe for its utility and thus for the release of the second video. The female lead actor in the video is the teacher’s daughter. The relationship between them had been signified in the first video where the teacher was tying the girl’s hair- a typical mother and daughter bond that develops over these home-baked hairdo sessions. The shooting took them a month and the audio recording and editing was done with in 1½ to 2 months. When asked whether there are any plans for another sequel, Rupak Tiary answered, “I haven’t planned one yet because we have already provided the audience with a happy ending. I don’t see a point in extending it further. We could’ve carried the storyline forward to marriage but I’m not sure whether the same cast and crew will be able to devote time into this project as leads in the video aren’t professional actors.” Most of the actors are Rupak Tiary’s childhood friends- Nilayana Dutta, Suvamoy Sarkar, Tias Bera, Mayanka Chatterjee, Jhuma Dutta, Apapbrita Dutta, Shouvik Dalal, Sudipta, Shinjit Sinha. The actors, Amrita Kormekar (lyricist), Aditya Paul (director, cinematographer and post producer) and Souvik Dalal (cinematographer) -claimed to have had a blast and to have relived their school and college days during the shoot.

Rupak TiaryThe team had last worked on the theme of Saraswati Puja in 2018. “I’m glad we could finally make another song video on Saraswati Puja. I believe that there’s a time limit- after which the song ceases to pluck the heartstrings of the audience. The songs involve a lot of devotion and maddening hardwork so we need to make sure all the aspects fall perfectly into place,” said Rupak Tiary. They took this chance because for the youth of Bengal, Saraswati Puja is a big deal. It’s basically the offical ‘Bengali Valentine’s Day’. Wearing a ‘Panjabi’, holding hands, dating, flirting, checking out sarees of girlfriends, visiting schools, colleges and coaching centres are the ‘must dos’ of the typical Bengali youth. We have grown up witnessing all this so, the song floods us with nostalgia. One cannot be sure whether they will get to witness the same essence ten years down the line with advancement in technology and the hubbub of a busy life and Rupak believes the song might even evolve into a cult song for this very reason! This year proved to be a jackpot because it’s almost intertwined with Valentine’s Day.

The insightful instrumental music and the saccharine voices of the vocal artists Rupak and Trishna Sharma took this song up not one but many notches. The flute played by Swarajit Ratul Guha brings about the essence of a soothing, brewing love that deepens as the lovers keep exchanging glances. The Bengali heritage and the culture of worshipping musical instruments, books, etc., depicts that art is considered as ‘vidya’. The ‘alpona’ (i.e. Bengali rangoli made with grounded rice) also adds to the quiddity of the Bong festival. There’s an instance in the video where the boy looks at the girl as the ‘pushpanjali‘ ends. It is a portrayal of the fact that the people we love, reside not only in our hearts but also in our prayers. We often experience a slight ache in the heart as the lovers shy away whenever there’s someone else around. The song and the natural acting of the leads dab the corners of our conscience which still believe in the existence of an innocent and patient love. The well renowned yellow theme of Saraswati Puja in West Bengal has been highlighted by the wardrobe of the actors, marigold garlands, a fun day out with friends, a crisp mood, sense of hope and eventually, a happy ending. This song video is the bang on proof that love outlives the dimensions of time and space and does not fade away with distance or passing scraps of time. People who know this, don’t find separation too unbearable and allow each other to grow abundantly. The backdrop inclusive of roof tops, book and tea stalls and the spring skies of Bengal makes for the perfect occassion and release date. Here’s a sweet Valentine’s Day message from the singer (and composer) with an intoxicating voice- “Only Bhab, No Aari!
