Blog 24: Astrida – Astrid

Brought up in London, Gagan aka Astrida is an Indian by birth. While interviewing her, we could feel the freshness and energy even through the static voice signals. With such sublime but deep insights on life and it’s aspects, she makes the world a better place. Not only does she set the stage on fire with her hoop dance but also on the dance floor when she plays fiddles electrically with the music on the DJ set. Read the article below to know more!

AstridaWhat has been your major obstacle so far?

It has always been myself. My biggest obstacle has been my own internal self doubt and this feeling that I am unable to do what I wish to. This is a feeling that always comes and goes and all of us have to deal with it no matter what we’re doing or who we are. It is a part of human experience that creeps upon us. However, once I’m on stage performing my art (be it music or dance), it vanishes. I remember why I am doing what I am doing.
I am very fortunate to have amazing family and friends who have always been supportive of what I do and that is a very rare gift.

How important do you think practice is, for one to overcome self doubt or lack of self confidence? Besides practice, what other tools come handy?

Practice definitely plays a great role. However, sometimes we reach a point where we sometimes need to disconnect from our practice and give ourselves a break. During times when we get so involved into things that we start feeling frustrated, we should try and do something else. In my experience, practice is essential because when you’re good at what you’re doing, it brings in a different level of confidence. The other power tools are meditation and high intensity workout which get me out of my thinking mind.

What do you think sets a person apart from the crowd? Astrid

It is the fierce desire to be oneself regardless of being rejected by everybody is what sets a person apart from the crowd.

How important do you think mental health is for a person to thrive and achieve their goals? What helps you cope with depression?

Mental health is absolutely pivotal. It is so important yet so underplayed in society. My own experience of battling with depression has taught me a lot. It is definitely not easy but very important for one to preserve and nurture their mental health. Everything actually stems out of that. Coming out on the other side of depression can also contribute to your art.

The three Ms: Music, Movement and Meditation – allow me to be healthy, happy and content.

Mention some important milestones in your career till date.

To be able to combine both my music and dance i.e. to be able to offer both in the same event in one evening has been a major satisfying milestone. Of course, that requires a lot of hardwork. Besides that, I was highly privileged to have the chance to perform fire dance at the Azora festival. It was a big highlight for me. In terms of music, my gig office went out of control this season after being signed to Digital Distortion Records. It was a jam-packed season; almost overwhelming but extremely exciting. Things just exploded after signing in for them.
